Pattaya Walking Street Gogo Bars…
A couple of TIC Brothers recently did a tour of the gogo bars on Walking Street in Pattaya, and while they had plenty of good things to say about the quality of the talent on display, rating it among the best they’d seen anywhere in the city, the conversation quickly turned to something a little less flattering: the price of doing business.
The New Barfine Reality
According to what they were quoted, barfines on Walking Street are now running at 1,500 THB before 10pm and jumping to 2,500 THB after 10pm. These aren’t figures from a single bar, this appears to be the going rate across several venues they visited.
For context, barfines in this range represent a significant step up from what long-time Pattaya visitors might remember. The barfine was traditionally the smaller part of the overall cost equation. That relationship between barfine and short time rate is starting to look a little lopsided.
For contrast during this same time period a TIC brother barfined a very attractive woman from what is generally considered the top gogo bar in Nana Plaza in Bangkok. The Bar Fine before 10pm was 700 THB. This is less than half of the quoted rates from Pattaya’s Walking Street.
The short time Rate Question
Before 10pm, short time rates were being quoted at 3,000 THB. For Walking Street, one of Pattaya’s premium entertainment zones, that’s arguably not shocking. Walking street has always commanded a premium over other parts ofPattaya.
But here’s where things get interesting, and it has to be said upfront: this is speculation, not confirmed fact.
If barfines roughly track at around 50% of the short time rate, which has historically been a rough rule of thumb in many venues, then a 2,500 THB post-10pm barfine might imply a short time rate somewhere in the region of 5,000 THB. Nobody has confirmed this figure directly. It may be lower. But the logic isn’t entirely unreasonable.
If that number turns out to be accurate, you’re looking at a combined outlay of 7,500 THB for a post-10pm short time on Walking Street. That is, by any measure, serious money in a Thai context. Not to mention this is not including the frequently required two lady drink minimum that can drive a streamlined experience to nearly 8,000 THB,
Is This Sustainable?
The 3,000 THB pre 10pm short time rate is defensible. Walking Street is a premium destination and people visiting it generally know they’re not in bargain territory. But if the after 10pm numbers are heading toward 5,000 THB for short time, on top of a 2,500 THB barfine, that starts to feel like a different conversation entirely.
At that price point Walking Street would be competing less with the rest of Pattaya and more with upscale venues in Bangkok. Whether the market will support these rates remains to be seen.
There will always be visitors for whom price is no object. But Pattaya’s broader appeal has historically rested on offering good value relative to other destinations. If Walking Street’s gogo bars are genuinely pushing toward 7,500 THB for a post 10pm encounter it’s worth asking if that pricing model is sustainable coming into low season and if this is going to become the new normal more broadly speaking for Walking Street.
What We Don’t Know
To be clear about the limits of this post: the pre 10pm figures (1,500 THB barfine, 3,000 THB short time) were quoted directly. The after 10pm short time rate is unknown, the 5,000 THB figure is an inference, not a confirmed price. The 2,500 post 10pm barfine are confirmed, this fact is not in question. What does seem clear is that the direction on Walking Street pricing is firmly upward. Whether that’s a smart business move or an overreach will ultimately be decided by the wallets of the people walking through the door.
With the low season upon us entering April it could be a long season for some Gogo bars that adopt this trend but are not able to deliver on quality of experience that justifies it.
